ABADÁ HISTORY

Only recently has a new generation of capoeiristas tried to combine Capoeira Regional and Capoeira Angola. The idea was to develop a new style which encompasses the modernizing innovations

of the legendary Mestre Bimba, without losing the guiding principles and values embedded in the history and philosophy of the art. Standing at the forefront of this contemporary movement is Abada Capoeira.

The focus of Abada-Capoeira’s philosophy is based on both Mestre Bimba's Capoeira Regional style and the lessons of Capoeira Angola. At this junction lies the evolution of capoeira. It is its future hidden in its past.

PHILOSOPHY

Abada Capoeira incorporates a multi - levelled philosophy for the development of capoeira. The philosophy includes the relentless pursuit of the technical mastery of capoeira on both the student and the teacher levels. The use of the art as a valuable pedagogic tool as well as an artistic and cultural resource, and the transformation of the students into teachers, thus keeping the original value systems of the early capoeira masters, their culture, and their life experiences.

Abada Capoeira aims to promote cultural and human values based on respect, socialization and freedom. It hopes to accomplish this by spreading the art of capoeira in universities, schools, clubs, associations, and communities. It also hopes to emphasize the lessons inherited from the Brazilian historical and cultural roots. By doing so, it aims to promote social integration between people of different backgrounds and classes while keeping its social goals.

Abada Capoeira also aims to inspire good character, dignity, and strong personal values in its students.

We, from Abada Capoeira, understand that capoeira is and has always been both an ancestral and futuristic art form. It is the living expression and embodiment of peoples who fought for their liberty. From this point of view, we believe it should be practiced with certain reverence and it deserves, from our part, the same respect and attention it was given by its predecessors. We also acknowledge that capoeira must not cease to evolve. While preserving the values involved our work points towards the future, embracing change and progress, trying to give capoeira the space and freedom it demands to develop its full potential.

Capoeira, like the chameleon, seeks change to preserve its own essence.

Abada Capoeira is a non-profit group. Its goal is to promote capoeira, the Brazilian culture and to use them as an important vehicle and example for social integration and individual growth. It is part of our philosophy to present our culture to everyone regardless of social classes, and by doing so we hope to keep our roots alive and flourishing.
